Professor Mark Tibbit

As a professor at ETH and MIT alum, Mark’s leadership in engineering and perfusion is unparalleled.

Research in the Macromolecular Engineering Laboratory integrates concepts and techniques from chemical and mechanical engineering, synthetic chemistry, materials science, and biology to design and assemble responsive soft (bio)materials. We sculpt structural and chemical details at the molecular scale to enable predictive and tunable control over emergent macroscale properties. Our user-programmable and responsive materials are employed to understand fundamental processes in biology and materials science as well as translated to solve clinical problems in the fields of materials science, drug delivery, regenerative medicine, and biomedical diagnostics.

Mark Tibbitt is an Associate Professor in the Macromolecular Engineering Laboratory within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich. He received his B.A. in Integrated Science and Mathematics from Northwestern University and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder under the supervision of Prof. Kristi S. Anseth. From 2013–2017, he was an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow in the Laboratory of Prof. Robert Langer in the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 2017–2023, he was an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) at ETH Zurich.

Professor Emeritus Rudolph von Rohr

Professor Emeritus Rudolph von Rohr

He graduated at ETH in Zurich in mechanical engineering with specialization in process engineering and completed the studies in 1978 with the diploma degree. After one year as scientific associate at the Institute of Process Engineering he started his thesis at the same Institute at ETH Zurich. In 1983 he received his doctorate and a stipend from the Swiss National Science Foundation for a postdoc at MIT in Cambridge, USA. Two years later he returned to ETH and started as lecturer in multi phase flow and as first assistant in the group of Prof.F.Widmer. In 1986 he became a research associate and project manager in a middle sized company which developed and erected processes and plants in the area of environmental technologies .He became technical director in 1990 before he returned to ETH in 1992 to fully commit to research and teaching. In 1998 his Laboratory for Transport Processes and Reaction is been founded. He was during four two years periods head of the Institute of Process Engineering and from 1997 until 2000 he chaired the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH. In 1999 he was guest professor at UC Santa Barbara in California, USA, in 2006 at MIT, USA.
